Chapter 1: Wallets and Seed Phrases

A wallet does not hold coins like a pocket

A crypto wallet holds keys that can control assets on a blockchain. The coins are recorded on-chain. The wallet gives permission to move them. That difference matters because whoever controls the private key or seed phrase can control the funds.

The seed phrase is the recovery key

A seed phrase can restore access to a wallet. It should never be typed into random websites, sent in chat, stored in screenshots, saved in cloud notes or shared with support accounts. Real support does not need it.

Write it offline

For meaningful funds, keep the recovery phrase offline on paper or metal and store it somewhere private. Digital copies are convenient, but convenience often creates the path attackers use.

Use small test transactions

Before sending a larger amount, send a small test amount first. It costs a little more time, but it confirms the address, wallet, network and token are behaving as expected.

The useful habit

Treat the seed phrase like cash plus identity plus password in one object. If a site asks for it, stop. If a person asks for it, stop. If a file stores it online, remove it.
